Creating innovative packaging solutions for over 85 years. And along the way, defining an industry.

The GPI story is actually a tale of two companies. The first traces its lineage back to 1923, when the industry was just beginning to understand the power of packaging.

This innovative leader, the Brown Paper Company, was the first in America to produce sheet kraft paper and linerboard. The company went on to pioneer numerous packaging machines and paperboard products over the years, first as Brown, then Olin Mathieson Chemical, Manville Forest Products and finally Riverwood International.

The second company owes its start to a labeling challenge so hot (or cold) no one else would touch it. During the early 1970s, the Coors brewery introduced a revolutionary sterile filling system that allowed the beer to remain cold, ensuring a fresher taste. However, at the time, there was no process that would adhere labels to cold, wet surfaces. And no label supplier would attack the problem. Coors had to create its own labeling/packaging arm to solve it. Which it did.

Soon, Coors Paper Packaging began solving packaging challenges for other companies. As its capabilities grew, its name reflected that growth—evolving from Coors to Advanced Packaging Technology and, eventually, Graphic Packaging.

During the 90s, Riverwood and Graphic Packaging emerged as the go-to powerhouses for the world’s leading brands. They joined forces in 2003 in order to offer global marketers a one-stop, world-class resource.

GPI began building a legacy of innovation from the very beginning. And those same principles drive us today. We face every challenge by asking one deceptively simple question: What if . . . ? The ground-breaking packaging solutions that result truly connect with consumers to generate excitement and build brands. We have the patents and our customers have the sales increases to prove it.
